Fellows Conference Serieas: Julian Hallai - "Effect of Lüders Bands on the Response and Stability of Steel Tubes under Bending"

Julian is a 2007 Roberto Rocca Education Program Fellow. He is pursuing his Ph.D in Mechanics Engineering at the University of Texas at Austin, in the US. Julian received both his Master and Bachelor degrees at the University of São Paulo in Brazil.

This presentation first provides an overview of the mechanics of installation of pipelines using reel-lay. Then elaborates the characteristics of carbon steel with Lüders bands and the effect of this material instability on the behavior of tubes under bending. The results obtaind from experiments are compared with those from computer simulations using the Finite Element Method. Finally, Julian presents the main parameters that influence the mechanical response of these tubes under bending, following a discussion on the relevance of the phenomenon to the designer.
